Area Hiking OpportunitiesSuggested Superior Hiking Trails Carton PeakPark at the Britton Peak trailhead parking lot 2.7 miles north of Cty. Rd. 2 (Sawbill Trail/Tofte Highway 61 milepost 82.8). Hike a moderate 2 miles to the summit of Carton Peak with breathtaking views. Hike back the same way. Cascade River LoopPark at the Cascade River Wayside (Highway 61 milepost 99.9). This challenging nine-mile loop takes you up one side of the Cascade River, follows Cty. Rd. 45 for .3 miles to cross the river, and then continues down the other side. There are many beautiful waterfalls on this route. Devil Track Canyon and RiverPark at the parking lot on Cty. Rd. 58 (Highway 61 milepost 113.8). Hike an easy 2.5 miles along the edge of the deepest canyon in Minnesota and see the Devil Track River before going back 2.5 miles the same way. Kadunce RiverPark at the Kadunce River Wayside (Highway 61 milepost 120.2). Take spur trail on the north side of the highway, .9 miles along the Kadunce River to the bridge. Lutsen MountainsRide the Lutsen ski area gondola to the top of Moose Mountain overlooking Lake Superior. Then walk a moderate 3.6 miles back through a forest of maples. Oberg Mountain LoopPark at the Oberg Parking Lot, 2 miles north on Forest Service Road 336 (Onion River Road/Lutsen, Highway 61 milepost 87.5). This moderate 2.5 mile loop has nine spectacular overlooks. Split Rock River LoopPark at the highway wayside near the mouth of the river (Highway 61 milepost 43.5). A 5-mie round trip leads up the very scenic river past numerous falls, cascades and pools. The return route crosses the river and heads back on the other side to Highway 61 with a high overlook of Lake Superior. More Information
